Professor John McWhorter loves Broad City. Why? Because Abbi and Ilana’s speech is authentic, true to the current moment — and that’s exactly what McWhorter, a linguistic and cultural expert at Columbia University, thinks is worthy of study. “It really is part of what being a linguist is,” McWhorter says. “To study how people actually talk, not how somebody decided 200 years ago that people should talk.”

Professor McWhorter believes that rather than rejecting modern lingo, we should embrace it, and look to understand the cultural underpinnings that cause our language to evolve. YAS QUEEN!
