2018 marks the 100th birthday of the legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. A trailblazing musical force and cultural ambassador, Bernstein is credited with bringing American classical music to the world stage.

In addition to his famed work as the longtime music director of the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein’s accolades include composing iconic, Broadway-shaping scores for West Side Story, Peter Pan, On the Waterfront, Candide, and much, much more.

This year, IVY joins arts organizations across the country in celebrating Leonard Bernstein. To learn more about his life and career, The IVY Podcast sat down for a conversation with Joshua Gersen, the New York Philharmonic’s current Assistant Conductor and former occupant of Bernstein’s chair.

Gersen gave an insider’s take on Bernstein’s music and what it’s like conducting the Philharmonic in the year of Bernstein’s centennial celebrations.
